Training

To support the development of athletes to compete outside the province, Badminton NL employs a decentralized coaching system coordinated between the provincial and club coaches.

Players from any part of Newfoundland and Labrador, who are members in good standing of Badminton NL, and have the motivation to train and compete may be considered for inclusion in the Provincial Training Program. Training is comprehensive, so that players make significant gains in capability and performance. Players who show effort and competitive spirit may be considered for competitions or training events outside the province.

The following criteria are used to select and retain players within this program:

  1. Players must commit to a minimum of two hours, twice per week for technical practice under the supervision of a coach, PE teacher, or adult with some knowledge of the game. This person will be the main interface with the provincial coach to deliver the training program from week-to-week.
  2. Players must adhere to a strength and conditioning program of a minimum three one-hour periods per week as prescribed by the provincial coach.
  3. Players are expected to attend specified group training sessions occurring on weekends throughout the year as well as occasional training camps of three to four days held during school breaks.
  4. Players are expected to participate in competition, including specific tournaments held within Newfoundland and Labrador as well as select competitions held out-of-province.
  5. While participation in other sports is encouraged, it can’t unduly disrupt a player’s development in badminton. Training for the province should be considered the highest priority.
