It was an interesting time at the Victor Baccalieu Trail Open Saturday, March 23^rd with 24 entries in this combined Junior/Senior event.

Geoff Robinson from the Avalon Club beat out Cody Squires of Baccalieu 21-11, 21-15 in the Men’s Singles A final. Geoff then paired up with club mate Bob Hendricks for Men’s Doubles A. The Avalon Club team denied gold to Conception Bay North’s Clyde Steele and Isaac Crane in a decisive match of 21-8, 21-11. In the Mixed Doubles A, Geoff pulled out his remaining reserves to pair up with Jenna Lee Ralph of Conception Bay North, beating the sibling team of Cody and Kylie Squires in a heart stopping 22-20, 21-19 final. Geoff achieved a Triple Crown win, and as a result of this tournament moved into the Number 1 Ranking Position in Men’s Singles A.

Kylie Squires, Canada Games team 2015 “came out of retirement” to win the Women’s Singles A, edging out Jenna Lee 19-21, 21-14, and 21-9, adding a gold medal to her mixed doubles silver. Cody paired up with father Wade to take the Bronze in Men’s Doubles A – a total six medals for the Squires family.

Other successes included Luke French of Conception Bay North taking the Under 13 Boys’ Singles gold with an intense 21-15, 16-21, 21-18 result over Ryder Morgan also of Conception Bay North.

In Under 15 Boys’ Singles, Jaden Mercer of Conception Bay North beat his doubles partner Brady Dale to take gold in a gruelling 18-21, 21-9, 21-16 final. The pair then took the Under 15 Boys’ Doubles gold in two straight games over Ron Brazil and Brandon Upshall, also of Conception Bay North, 21-10, 21-5. Brandon Upshall won the draw for a Victor racquet bag.
