A Record Turnout at 2019 Coast of Bays Open

A record 28 players participated in the 2019 Coast of Bays Open, February 8-9, 2019. What began as a simple “Training & Tourney” weekend has grown in the past three years to become an annual event for the Bay d’Espoir area.

In Men’s Singles, Max Hunt of Galtois beat out John Gillam of Avalon Badminton Club 21-11, 22-20 while Alexander Maye beat Dylan Collier of Bay d’Espoir in identical games of 21-17, 21-17. Max then took Gold, prevailing over Alexander who won Silver in the final match, 21-16, 21-17. Dylan won Bronze, beating John 21-11, 21-18.

In Women’s Singles, Jessica Willcott of Bay d’Espoir beat Samantha Maye, 21-8, 21-8 while Gabrielle Hunt of Gaultois beat Christie Rose in a grueling match 18-21, 21-12, 21-11. In the final, Jessica beat Gabrielle 21-13, 21-11 to take Gold, while Gabrielle took Silver. Christie beat Samantha 21-15, 21-15 to win Bronze.

In Men’s Doubles, Max and Alexander were Gold medalists. Braden Collier and Christian Snook won Silver by beating out Dylan and Lenny Zhang of Rennie’s Mill Junior Club in a tense match, 21-15, 17-21, 23-21. Dylan and Lenny took Bronze.

In Women’s Doubles, Jessica Willcott and Hannah Steele from Bay d’Espoir beat Emma Collier and Chloe Piercey 21-8, 21-4, while Gabrielle Hunt and Christie Rose beat Alexandra Strickland and Brooklyn Framp of Bay d’Espoir in a pulse-racing match of 21-19, 19-21, 21-18. In the final, Jessica and Hannah scored Gold with a 21-17, 21-18 win over Gabrielle and Christie who took Silver. Alexandra and Brooklyn beat out Emma and Chloe 21-12, 21-14 to take home Bronze.

In Mixed Doubles, the Canada Games pair of Jessica and Dylan beat Kaitlyn Coombs and Ethan Mullins, 21-14, 21-11 while Gabrielle and Max beat Hannah and John 8-21, 21-14, 21-7. In the final, Jessica won her third Gold for the day with Dylan in a 21-15, 21-18 win over Silver medalists Gabrielle and Max. Hannah and John took Bronze with a decisive 21-14, 21-8 over Kaitlyn and Ethan.

Under 15 Boys’ Singles saw Marcus Hoskins win Gold, Braden Collier Silver and Mark Willcott Bronze. In Under 15 Girls’ Singles, Alexandra Strickland won Gold, Brooklyn Framp Silver, and Emma Collier Bronze. All medalists were from Bay d’Espoir

In Under 15 Mixed Doubles, Emma and Marcus won Gold, Alexandra and Braden Silver, Brooklyn and Mark Bronze.

Bay d’Epoir provided the medalists for the Under 13 events as well. In Singles, Peter Manual won Gold, Peyton Howse Silver, and Sierra King Bronze. Under 13 Doubles saw Peter team up with Grayson Turco to take Gold, while Peyton and Sierra were Silver medalists. Peter won his third Gold by teaming up with Peyton to beat Grayson and Sierra.

Peter Manuel and Jessica Willcott were Triple Crown winners in the 2019 Coast of Bays Open, February 8-9, 2019.
